Botswana has recently adopted a new national development policy aimed at promoting decent jobs, improving workplace safety, and addressing inequality in the labour market, the Minister of Labour and Home Affairs Major General(Rtd) Pius Mokgware has said.

Speaking at the 113th International Labour Conference in Geneva this week, minister Mokgware said the policy adopts a human rights-based approach and is designed to ensure fairness and dignity for all workers. According to Minister Mokgware, the policy serves as a direct national response strategy to persistent challenges such as unemployment and poor working conditions, especially those affecting women and youth.

“Our framework links decent employment with labour rights and social justice,” said Mokgware. “The theme for this year’s conference can not be overemphasised as it highlights the importance of attaining decent working conditions, including safety and social inclusion.”

The new policy also aligns with Botswana’s commitment to the International Labour Organization (ILO) Declaration on Social Justice for a Fair Globalisation. Mokgware emphasised that the declaration mandates member states to focus on sustainable job creation, improved job quality, and inclusive labour practices.

In his remarks, Mokgware acknowledged the global challenges of unemployment and inequality, noting that Botswana’s policy aims to unlock sustainable employment opportunities and uplift marginalised groups.

“This policy is a strategic tool to counteract joblessness and ensure that every worker enjoys rights-based protections in a safe and equitable workplace,” he said.
