Botswana and China have signed a beef export protocol that will enable the landlocked southern African nation to export beef to the Chinese market.

The agreement was announced during the ongoing Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) meetings. The deal is expected to open up access for Botswana’s beef industry to the lucrative Chinese market.

According to a statement released by the Minister of International Relations, Dr. Phenyo Butale, the agreement marks a strategic partnership focused on economic, social, and agricultural development.

Access to China’s vast market can significantly boost Botswana’s beef industry, enhance export revenues, and stimulate local economies, the statement noted.

Additionally, the deal will allow Botswana to diversify its export destinations, reducing reliance on traditional markets that are often influenced by geopolitical uncertainties.

Dr. Butale also emphasised that the protocol is intended to strengthen diplomatic relations between Botswana and China, reinforcing their growing multifaceted partnerships.
