Botswana is pursuing partnerships with Hungary as another intervention to grow its sports sector and ultimately attract foreign investment.
The Minister of Sport and Arts Jacob Kelebeng, who is currently on a working visit in Budapest, Hungary, has said. According to Kelebeng, Botswana will be looking to Hungary for sports development and opportunities.
Kelebeng said Botswana is currently excelling in athletics and table tennis and that it will be looking to extend its success by engaging in strategic partnerships with Hungary.
“There is a lot that we would like to learn from them, as you would know that they are a nation that is deeply committed to manufacturing and are also excelling in sport compared to us. We are currently here to work around matters involving sporting diplomacy among others,” said Kelebeng.
He revealed that Hungary already is a partner in youth education and that his ministry will be looking to extend its cooperation through sporting diplomacy. This will go a long way into helping open up more opportunities for athletes in the country, he noted.
“We are also here because we are learning the smart way of constructing sporting arenas and stadiums. They build in ways that are focused on green energy,” stated Kelebeng.
The Hungary trip will also be centred around proposing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two countries. This MoU will open up conversations about professional athletes being adopted into the Hungary league, professional athletes scholarships, and governance and finance models for national Olympic committees.
