AP Concludes Successful Elective Congress in Serowe

The Alliance for Progressives (AP) has wrapped up a successful elective congress today in Serowe, marking a decisive moment in the party’s leadership renewal.

The internal elections, which were declared free and fair by the party’s electoral commission, saw a strong showing by senior Members of Parliament and ministers of the party, which is an affiliate of the ruling Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) coalition.

Party president Ndaba Gaolathe retained his position unopposed, reinforcing his influence and stability at the helm of the AP. In the hotly contested vice-presidency, Wynter Mmolotsi triumphed with 551 votes against Theresa Mmolawa’s 80, showcasing his wide support within party ranks.

For the secretary-general position, Dr Phenyo Butale secured 452 votes, defeating Dr Edwin Makwati, who garnered 174 votes. Meanwhile, Minister of Labour and Home Affairs, Retired Major General Pius Mokgware, was elected unopposed as chairman, reflecting his continued importance in the party’s strategic direction.

In his post-election remarks, Gaolathe praised the calibre of candidates elected into the central committee, saying, “I have observed that AP has a crop of candidates that have the ability and heart to help bridge life gaps and therefore will be used to grow the movement.”

He urged the newly elected leadership to uphold the core values of the party. “To the winners, remain true to our values of integrity, honesty, truth, and respect for the sanctity of human life. We must never forget our aspirations and our vision,” he emphasised.

The AP, established in 2017 following a split from the Botswana Movement for Democracy (BMD), continues to be a pivotal player within the UDC coalition. The successful congress in Serowe is seen as a reaffirmation of the party’s commitment to internal democracy and national leadership transformation.
