Emma Peloetletse Steps Down as Permanent Secretary to the President After Guiding Historic Political Transition

Staff Writer

The tenure of Emma Peloetletse, the Permanent Secretary to the President (PSP) and Head of the Public Service, has officially come to an end following the expiration of her employment contract.

Peloetletse retires from her post after serving the nation with profound diligence during one of the most critical junctures in Botswana’s political history.

Peloetletse’s departure closes a significant chapter in the country’s civil service. While her contract has not been renewed, she steps down having left an indelible mark on the republic’s administrative landscape. Most notably, she is credited with facilitating a stable, peaceful, and seamless transfer of power following the watershed general elections that saw the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) assume office.

Serving as the highest-ranking civil servant, Peloetletse’s tenure is uniquely distinguished by her service under two distinct administrations. She was appointed under the leadership of former President Dr. Mokgweetsi Masisi and subsequently played a pivotal role in anchoring the government machinery during the handover to President Duma Boko.

Her steady leadership was vital in assisting the incoming UDC government as it navigated its historic transition into power, effectively ending 58 years of uninterrupted governance by the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP). During a period that demanded absolute bureaucratic neutrality and administrative continuity, Peloetletse ensured that the daily operations of the government enclave remained uninterrupted.

Throughout her distinguished career, Peloetletse demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the republic. As the Head of the Public Service, she championed administrative continuity and guided the civil service through complex national challenges, always maintaining a posture of absolute professionalism.

Her ability to navigate the shifting political tides and ensure the state machinery operated without friction is a testament to her steadfast character. She placed the stability of the country above all else, securing her legacy as a pillar of institutional strength during a profound era of change.

As she heads into retirement, Peloetletse leaves behind a robust and tested public service framework. While the Office of the President has yet to announce her successor, the nation thanks her for her diligence and her grace, formally acknowledging her monumental contribution to Botswana’s democratic maturity and her years of dedicated service to the people.
