New Era Dawns at BERA As Dr. Never Tshabang Takes the Helm

A significant shift is underway in Botswana’s energy sector as the Botswana Energy Regulatory Authority (BERA) announces the appointment of Dr. Never Tshabang as its new Chief Executive Officer. This move, effective August 1st, 2025, signals the government’s strong commitment to fostering an era of renewed governance and strategic reform across its state-owned enterprises.

Tshabang’s appointment is generating considerable optimism among industry leaders. With a distinguished career spanning two decades in academia, public service, and corporate leadership, he brings a wealth of experience to the role. A Ph.D. holder in Chemistry from the Australian National University, his background also includes serving as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Botswana and as a Member of Parliament.

The Board Chairperson, Ms. Tidimalo Poonyane, conveyed the collective excitement surrounding Tshabang’s arrival, highlighting that the appointment is the result of a rigorous and thoughtful process. The board is confident that Dr. Tshabang’s leadership will be instrumental in strengthening BERA’s role and driving Botswana’s energy transformation forward.

Honourable Bogolo Kenewendo, the Minister of Minerals and Energy, reinforced this positive outlook, emphasising the strategic importance of the appointment. The government is actively working to reposition the energy sector to better support Botswana’s broader economic transformation. The minister believes that Tshabang’s leadership, with its deep technical and regulatory expertise, is precisely what is needed to guide BERA toward a secure, transparent, and future-ready energy sector.

Dr. Tshabang’s multifaceted expertise is poised to be a key asset, promoting greater transparency and accountability within the energy landscape. His vision is set to align with the national agenda, promising to steer BERA towards a future where it not only regulates but also actively contributes to the nation’s economic prosperity. As the winds of change begin to sweep through government parastatals, Dr. Tshabang’s appointment stands out as a beacon of progress and a clear signal of the government’s unwavering resolve to build a more dynamic and efficient public sector.
