President Duma Boko Launches Botswana Economic Transformation Plan Labs

President Advocate Duma Boko has officially launched the Botswana Economic Transformation Plan labs, describing the initiative as a decisive “paradigm shift in mindset” and a fundamental change in the way the nation approaches and executes its development strategy.

Speaking at the launch on Monday this week, Boko stressed that the time for ideas alone had passed and that the focus must now be on delivery, which he identified as the central message of the new programme.

Boko explained that during a recent strategic cabinet workshop, the executive reached a consensus on the direction the nation must take to achieve its ambitions. The vision, he said, is to see Botswana attain high-income status, driven by digital innovation, export growth, people-centred development and economic diversification. This transformation envisions a country where every citizen has equal opportunity, is employed, and empowered to contribute to national progress.

Boko further underscored the importance of infrastructure as the foundation for growth, particularly in strengthening transport, logistics, and utility systems to position Botswana as the leading logistics hub in the SADC region. Further to this, he called for the development of a modern, smart economy through the expansion of financial services and digitalisation, with the goal of establishing Botswana as a regional fintech hub.

Moreover, as for the tourism sector, he emphasised the need to harness the country’s natural heritage in a way that promotes sustainable growth while safeguarding its cultural identity.

Addressing the energy, water, and mining sectors, the President highlighted plans to advance renewable energy initiatives, achieve water sufficiency and equitable distribution, diversify the mining industry, and promote downstream beneficiation. Additionally, the president reaffirmed that social sectors such as education, healthcare, and social protection must remain central to transformation efforts, noting that no nation can truly progress if its people are left behind.

He concluded by stressing that all actions under the Economic Transformation Plan must be time-bound, concentrated within a three-year period, and anchored in clear, measurable targets.
