In a major boost to regional trade and cross-border infrastructure development, the Malawian government has confirmed its intention to procure 450 prefabricated schools and clinics through Botswana’s African Hero model. The massive procurement follows a high-level visit to Gaborone by Malawi’s Second Vice President, the Right Honourable Enoch Kamzingeni Chihana, who delivered glowing reviews of the initiative during private discussions, emphasizing its potential to fundamentally transform social infrastructure across the African continent.
Central to fulfilling this ambitious cross-border order is the construction of the Afri-forge manufacturing facility in Gabane. The industrial hub, which is currently under development and expected to become fully operational between February and March 2027, will mass-produce lightweight, high-durability prefabricated panels. Once online, the facility will rapidly manufacture and supply the structural materials required to meet both Malawi’s procurement demands and local infrastructure expansion in Botswana.
The establishment of the Afri-forge manufacturing plant marks a significant milestone in Botswana’s broader industrialization agenda. By anchoring production locally, Botswana not only positions itself as an exporter of modern, cost-effective infrastructure across Sub-Saharan Africa, but also creates crucial manufacturing jobs, fosters technical skills transfer, and establishes the nation as a central hub for homegrown African innovation.
