Following his return from a historic state visit to the People’s Republic of China from October 12 to 17, 2026, President Advocate Duma Gideon Boko addressed the media in Gaborone on Monday, declaring that Botswana and China have opened a transformative new chapter in their 51-year diplomatic relationship. The landmark trip, which served as President Boko’s first official state visit to the Asian economic powerhouse since assuming office, culminated in the formal elevation of bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership.
High-Level Bilateral Talks & Strategic Summitry
The centerpiece of the visit took place in Beijing, where President Boko was received by Chinese President Xi Jinping with full state honors, including a ceremonial welcome in the Northern Hall of the Great Hall of the People and an official state banquet. During their bilateral talks, the two leaders focused on strengthening long-standing ties, accelerating Botswana’s economic diversification, and expanding industrial cooperation. President Boko reaffirmed Botswana’s commitment to the One-China principle and explicitly expressed opposition to Taiwan independence in a joint declaration. In turn, President Xi pledged Beijing’s firm support for Botswana’s long-term modernization and sustainable development goals. Expanding on these diplomatic channels, President Boko also held key bilateral meetings with Premier Li Qiang and Zhao Leji, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, alongside participating in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Monument to the People’s Heroes.
Industrial Exploration: Fuzhou, E-Mobility, & CATL
Prior to arriving in Beijing for summit talks, President Boko and his delegation spent time in Fujian Province, focusing heavily on technology transfer, urban planning, and high-tech industrial development. In Fuzhou, President Boko toured Project 3820, benchmarking Fuzhou’s strategic thirty-year urban and industrial transformation against Botswana’s own economic expansion plans. A central priority highlighted during these tours was Botswana’s goal of establishing an electric-mobility manufacturing and assembly hub in the Serorome Valley, located along the Tropic of Capricorn. The proposed hub aims to transition the country from importing finished vehicles to producing components and assembling electric vehicles locally. To advance this vision, President Boko visited Contemporary Amperex Technology Company Limited, the world’s leading manufacturer of electric vehicle batteries, to pitch direct investment opportunities in Botswana’s mineral beneficiation and clean-energy supply chains. Additionally, President Boko toured Huawei’s Beijing Research Institute to explore partnerships for digitalizing public infrastructure and streamlining government services.
Trade Expansion & The Botswana-China Business Forum
In Beijing, the delegation officiated at the Botswana-China Business Forum, which brought together leadership from approximately thirty Botswana enterprises and over one hundred Chinese companies. Key discussions centered on capitalizing on new zero-tariff arrangements for eligible African exports entering the Chinese market, as well as broadening Botswana’s export footprint beyond traditional mineral dependence. The delegation highlighted citrus fruits, beef, and value-added agricultural commodities as immediate focus areas for trade expansion, emphasizing that Chinese technical expertise and market access can help build local production capacity while positioning Botswana as a competitive regional supplier. During the forum, bilateral delegates signed several key Memoranda of Understanding covering trade cooperation, health, education, and broadcasting media, establishing a legal framework for collaboration between Botswana Television and Chinese media platforms for news dissemination.
Media Engagement: Leaders Talk & Global Outlook
Throughout his time in China, President Boko engaged actively with international media networks, most notably appearing on China Media Group’s flagship global interview program, Leaders Talk. In his televised interview, President Boko reflected on China’s rapid economic evolution and its historic achievement in lifting nearly eight hundred million people out of poverty, describing it as a powerful development model. He emphasized that Botswana aims to adapt practical, scalable lessons from China’s industrialization and urban planning strategies to address its domestic economic challenges, shorten implementation timelines between project conception and delivery, and drive long-term national prosperity.
Post-Visit Press Conference: Turning Commitments into Action
Addressing reporters upon his return to Gaborone on Monday, President Boko emphasized that diplomatic achievements must now be swiftly converted into tangible economic deliverables. He noted that Botswana and China have established a solid foundation that spans trade, agriculture, healthcare, education, digital technology, infrastructure, and green energy. Moving forward, the administration’s primary focus will be translating these bilateral frameworks into concrete outcomes for the nation, including direct investment commitments, technology transfer, local skills development, and sustainable job creation for Botswana’s citizens.
